Set in the shadow of Mt. Rainier, this race offers spectacular views. Like \\\"The Mountain\\\" itself, though, the race stands as an ultimate test of mental character and physical endurance. Over the 50-mile distance the race course rises and falls a staggering 8,700 feet (total elevation change: 17,400 feet). The race features rolling terrain, ridge tops, northwest forest, several sections of technical trails, and of course several demanding climbs and challenging descents. Race numbers are limited to 400 of the toughest endurance athletes this country has to offer. Most competitors will be pleased just to complete the race distance. However, as an extra testament to supreme performance, at least $7,500 in prize money is offered, going five deep in each category.

I wonder if my race reports are going to suck in 2010?
This year marks my 4th year running ultramarathons – in fact, Mountain Mist is my first three-peat race – and the fourth year since I made the choice to give up the fat ass way of life and start lacing up the kicks to...
Dood.
For this trail jockey, the theme of the 2010 Mount Cheaha 50K was eating dirt.
Chasing goals again
I just can’t help it.
I can tell myself, “I’m just gonna chill, and enjoy this one” – but a few days before a race, I become laser-focused and usually decide that...

Around 9:30 Saturday night, after completing my 60th mile, I learned that I was in first place for the men.
…and then I just stopped.
Woods Ferry 24-hour, …or not.
Li’l Weezy talked me into heading to rural, and I mean RURAL, South Carolina for a 24-hour event in the Sumter National Forest between Union and Chester, SC.
Strolling Jim
He said there were no real hills.
Underestimating a Gary Cantrell race is just foolish and you’d think I’d know better – especially after popping my cherry on The Barkley this year – but sure enough, I went into this race thinking, “A nice little road race, good taper...

Stupid is as stupid does
Any ultrarunner knows that DNFs happen. ** (DNF=did not finish)
But they really sting when everything is going right – Pace consistent, nutrition tight, body...
Chasing my confidence
Cool! …I found something else to love.
And even better, swimming 5K was all it took to shake off the Keys 100-miler DNF and gain some confidence back. …well, that, and losing my big toenail this morning which pretty much...

me: “Babette, can I please go to Fernandina Beach and swim in that 5K ocean race?”
Babs: “Where’s Fernan.. where are you going?”
me: “FernanDINA …beach,” I said. “It’s in Florida.”
